Les Métamorphoses du Jour, 39 in pen and black ink over pencil, 21 in pen and brown ink and watercolour over pencil w. handwritten caption in black ink and 8 in pen and brown ink without caption, on heavy wove paper with watermarks "J. Whatman 1838" and "J. Whatman 1839", contemp. hmor., oblong folio. On the drawings for Les Métamorphoses du Jour (published in lithography by Bulla, Paris, 1828-1829), see 'Grandville, dessins originaux' (Nancy, exhib. cat. Mus. des Beaux-Arts, 1986) p.151-152 and passim. "On ne saurait exagérer l'importance des Métamorphoses du jour. Elles constituent le premier grand succès de Grandville et annoncent trois aspects majeurs de son oeuvre: la fantaisie, la satire morale et la caricature politique." (p.151). The book went through several editions, and an edition with the plates in woodengraving after the original lithographs was published by G. Havard in 1854. Cf. Ray 132; Beraldi VII, Grandville 10; Bilderwelten 80; Vicaire V, 775-788; Sander 310-311. Although the dated paper and the decease of the artist in 1847 makes it almost impossible to prove that the drawings were made (as examples for the colouring?) for either the lithographed or woodengraved edition of the book, the superb technique of the drawings, identical to that of Grandville, and the equally superb watercolouring, make it tempting to suggest that they are by the hand of their original creator.
