[Art]. Mankes, Jan (1889-1920). Archive,

consisting of I. an autograph notebook (±1914, (80) pages w. autograph drafts, annotations etc. in pen and ink (1 leaf in pencil), (42) blank pages (approx. 30 leaves have at some time been cut out and are no longer present), orig. clothbacked boards. SIGNED AND DATED in pen and ink "J. Mankes Maart 1914" on upper pastedown); II. an autograph school notebook (±1914, (32) pages w. autograph quotations in pen and ink from various poets and authors and his reflections on these writings, as well as notes on Dutch grammar, orig. blue wrappers); III. 1 loose leaf w. autograph poem in pen and ink (originally part of the previous school notebook); IV. 2 loose autograph drafts of letters (to Annie Zernike (dated "t Meer Febr. '14", (5)p. on 3 (2x fold.) lvs, pen and ink, recto and verso) and part of a letter to A.A.M. Pauwels (undated (1914), (4)p. on 1 fold. leaf, pen and ink, recto and verso) ; V. 3 booklets published in the series Gowans's Nature Books. No.1. Wild Birds at Home (Glasgow, 1905); no.5. Wild Birds at Home, Second series (ibid., 1906) and no.13. Birds at the Zoo (ibid., 1907) (all in orig. unif. wr., 12mo. Wrappers browned). [II]. The second notebook is different in nature from the previous notebook. Generally speaking it shows a more studious Mankes and tells us more about his interests in literature, poetry, religion and art and the importance of modern developments in the arts for his own art. He quotes from Willem Kloos, M. van Campen, and, most extensively (10 pages), from Van Deyssel's Uit het leven van Frank Rozelaar. After these quotations, nine pages with basic rules of Dutch grammar and spelling follow. These pages reflect the influence that Annie Zernike had on him: she lent books of these authors to Mankes from these authors and stimulated Mankes to improve his wrinting and language. skills. [III]. A loose leaf (originally forming part of the second notebook), with an autograph poem by Mankes headed: "Lief kun je dit land voor mij zijn" (17 lines) [IV]. Two loose letters on letterpaper: one addressed to Annie and one addressed to A.A.M. Pauwels. In the letter to Annie, Mankes writes about Frank Rozelaar and his response to it: "Frank Roozelaar is voor mij ook heerlijk mooi, een waar genot om te lezen. This part of the letter ends abruptly with the name of Plasschaert spelt in two different ways: "Plasscheart" and "Plasschaert". The following page contains an unfinished draft of a love poem, after which the letter is continued. The second letter is an undated draft of a letter to the art dealer and collector A.A.M. Pauwels, dating to the months January/ February 1914 and continues a discussion about Christianity which they had in 1913 (Pauwels was a devout Catholic and had expressed his fears that Mankes was becoming too liberal in his attitude towards Christian religion): "(...) (...) [V]. The three booklets were published by Gowan between 1905-1907. These little books with photographic illustrations of birds belonged to Mankes library and have printed captions to the illustrations that were partly translated in pen and ink by Mankes himself. The booklets and some of the illustrations were occasionally used as models for his artwork, as can be seen on for example Muisje op boekje (see Jan Mankes, Mooie dingen zijn zoo eenvoudig (exhib. cat. Arnhem/ Heerenveen 2025), provisional oeuvre catalogue 25-57), which shows Mankes copy of Birds at the Zoo (see also note 9 to letter 18 in Jan Mankes, een kunstenaarsleven in brieven, 1910-1920 (Zwolle/ The Hague, 2013) and Reigersneb met boekje en judaspenning (provisional oeuvre catalogue 25-332).
